Advanced Dungeons & Dragons was written as a codification of Gary Gygax's preference for a more formal, tournament-ready set of rules based on Dungeons & Dragons. In contrast to the BECMI line of game, Advanced Dungeons & Dragons was explicitly rooted in verisimilitude.
