Agency is the power or capacity of an individual to act independently and make their own free choices. In the context of role-playing games, there are two relevant types of agency:
- Character agency is the agency of the characters (including player characters) in the game world.
- Player agency is the agency of the players at the table (including the GM).
While character agency may be taken away during the normal course of play, taking player agency from a player should never happen in a game and may be considered a form of abuse against that player.
