The versions of Dungeons & Dragons that were aimed at the mass market, following the Original Dungeons & Dragons rules, but preceding the division between the classic rules set and Advanced Dungeons & Dragons. The two, very similar versions begin with the Moldvay Basic and Expert sets, and then a revised version beginning with the Mentzer red box.
