The freedom principle is: "Any possible action that could be taken by a character can be adjudicated within the immersive framework of the game."
It is posited to be a criterion of a role-playing game.
The freedom principle means
- you can choose any legal "game move"
- you can assign any decision-making process to your character you choose
- you can use your authorial privilege to propose any allowed narration
It does NOT mean
- you can violate the narrative principle
- you can change the rules to whatever you want
- you can narrate any event you like
The freedom principle does not mean having lots of choices are good or having few is bad. It simply means that in order to be a role-playing game, you must have the freedom to make choices as if you were a character or as if the imaginary world existed.
