A game mat or battle mat is a surface, usually vinyl, pre-printed for use with a role-playing game. The most common forms are the grid mat, which is made up of a square grid, and the hex map which is covered in regular hexagons. 1" is a common scale.

Game mats are used primarily for drawing temporary maps, particularly combat maps that show how characters are positioned in a location and depicting obstacles and other parts of the environment. Graph paper may also be used for this purpose, but is more often used for other types of map.

Game mats are often employed in conjunction with erasable markers.
