"I will not abandon you" is an agreement that groups can adopt as part of their social contract, in which all players expect to experience content that could be emotionally distressing and promise to remain engaged with the gameplay and support each other as the challenging content is played out. This relates both to players who are challenged by the content and those who introduce content that challenges other players. The concept was first described by Meguey Baker.[1]

"I will not abandon you" is contrasted with "Nobody gets hurt", in which players agree not to cross anyone's boundaries at all during play.[1]

"Nobody gets hurt" and "I will not abandon you" preceded the widespread creation and adoption of safety tools in role-playing games. Avery Alder has said that, although the notions of "Nobody gets hurt" and "I will not abandon you" were important when first created, "such positions are inherently reflected and communicated through the variety of safety mechanics and practices available today" without needing to be stated in full.[2]
