Middle-earth is the setting of J.R.R. Tolkien's legendarium, including The Lord of the Rings and other books. It is, loosely, a mythical version of ancient Earth.
The name is related to Midgard, the world of mortal beings, from Old English, in turn from the old Norse legends.
