A pen, pencil or other writing implement is a tool used for writing or drawing, usually on paper. It is one of the most common game aids used for face-to-face tabletop role-playing games, to the extent that such role-playing games are sometimes known as pen-and-paper role-playing games to distinguish them from other forms (such as live action role-playing games and computer role-playing games).

Examples of writing implement used in role-playing games[]

Pens mark paper with ink, which is usually permanent.

Pencils mark paper instead with graphite, which is easier to erase and replace, and therefore more common for tracking traits that vary over the course of a campaign (e.g. hit points).

Markers use ink, which is usually permanent on paper, but some markers use ink that can be erased or wiped away when used on a vinyl surface such as a game mat.
