A prestige class (PrC) is a class in certain role-playing games, most famously Dungeons & Dragons v3.5, that becomes available to characters only after they meet certain prerequisites and may not be chosen at character creation (perhaps because the prerequisites include a certain number of levels in another class first). As such, prestige classes are always part of a multi-class build. They are considered desirable because they have a narrower focus that may more closely match a player's desired archetype for their character, and sometimes because they are more powerful than non-prestige classes (hence the restrictions).
Prestige class were introduced to Dungeons & Dragons 3rd edition by game designer Jonathan Tweet, who based them on the cults in Runequest.[1]
