Race, also called species or ancestry, is a character type representing a character's origin and nature, generally either their biological lineage or else the general form of their type of creature (biological or not). Race is most often used in fantasy and science fiction games. It is often paired with a second character type, most often class.

Because real-world racism exists, the term race should be considered carefully in an RPG context. Thoughtlessly, someone might post a discussion thread titled, "What Race Do You Hate?" While intended to express opinions about character types, that title immediately suggests real-world racial hatred, bigotry, and even genocide.
