A System Reference Document or SRD is a simplified description of the basic rules of a role-playing game (generally devoid of setting information and lore), which is made available under a public copyright license (e.g. Creative Commons, the Open Gaming License, or the Game System License) so that game designers not affiliated with the game's original publisher can use the text of the SRD for their own work.

History[]

The first SRD was released in 2000 by Wizards of the Coast under the Open Gaming License, and included the basic rules produced for Dungeons & Dragons 3rd edition. Many of the games and publications released during the d20 bubble used the rules from this System Reference Document.

Later publications have used the term SRD to refer to their own texts, which are intended to be similarly used for the new game system.
