A template is anything that determines or serves as a pattern for something to be created. In an RPG context, template can refer to any of the following:
- In publishing, a template is a format used to prepare text for layout.
- In formatting and design, a template can be a specific layout for character sheets, writeups, and so forth that are normal for the game.
- In character creation, a template is a sort of class or archetype for characters. It may also be a pre-generated character or proto-character (especially in games that don't use classes).
- A template may be a defined set of rules or traits that can be added on top of other things in a game, e.g. to alter the abilities of a character or creature. Half-dragon is a template in Dungeons & Dragons that turns a creature into a creature with dragon parentage, with appropriate abilities.
