The Western genre involves narratives set in the American southwest or - more broadly - locations that largely resemble it, such as sparsely-populated desert planets. Westerns tend to be set in the mid/late 19th century and emphasize being historically accurate to the period, but some are more of an alternate history, even crossing with steampunk.
