World of Darkness is a supernatural horror roleplaying game franchise, originally published by White Wolf Publishing, that began with the release of Vampire: The Masquerade in 1991. Player characters in the World of Darkness gamelines are typically modern day supernatural characters with a remnant of humanity, who must balance mortal concerns with their monstrous nature.

The name World of Darkness is used to describe both a collection of gamelines that share a single setting, and also to describe the setting itself.

The setting was concluded in 2004 with the apocalyptic Time of Judgment event, before being relaunched as the "new" World of Darkness later that year with its own standalone setting and gamelines. Since White Wolf was acquired by Paradox Interactive in 2015, this spin-off franchise has become known as Chronicles of Darkness.

Since 2004 the "original" or "old" World of Darkness setting has been revived - first through the 20th Anniversary Edition released through license by Onyx Path Publishing (beginning with Vampire: The Masquerade 20th Anniversary Edition in 2011), and later with a new wave of releases from White Wolf itself following the acquisition by Paradox (beginning with Vampire: The Masquerade 5th Edition in 2018). This revived version of the classic setting is sometimes referred to as the "One World of Darkness".
